Moving forward on AI, GitLab is offering a public beta of GitLab Duo Agent Platform, a devsecops orchestration platform intended to unlock asynchronous collaboration between developers and AI agents.
Announced July 17, GitLab Duo Agent Platform establishes an intelligent orchestration layer to promote seamless collaboration between developers and specialized AI agents, GitLab said. The platform equips AI agents with comprehensive project context to enable informed decisions that align with organizational standards, according to GitLab.
The GitLab Duo Agent Platform beta is available to all GitLab Premium and Ultimate customers in GitLab.com and self-managed environments. The first beta integrates with IDEs through the GitLab plug-ins for Visual Studio Code and JetBrains IDEs, while plans call for expanding the IDE support. General availability of the platform is targeted for the end of the year.
The GitLab Duo Agent Platform currently includes a chat agent that performs general development tasks, such as reading issues or code diffs, and a software development agent that works on assigned tasks by creating code changes in virtual development environments and opening merge requests for review. These agents are currently in beta. GitLab said it was also currently working on agents for product planning, software testing, code reviewing, platform engineering, security analysis, deployment engineering, and deep research.
In addition to these agents, GitLab is also building agent flows into the platform. Agent flows are complex workflows that can involve multiple agents and run autonomously. For example, the software development flow, currently in beta, orchestrates multiple agents to plan, implement, and test code changes, drawing on the project’s structure, code base, and history for context. GitHub issues or merge requests also are factored into the plans, GitLab said.
The GitLab Duo Agent Platform can connect to remote and locally running MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers, allowing agents to connect to systems beyond GitLab like Jira, ServiceNow, and ZenDesk to gather context or take actions, GitLab said. The company added that the official GitLab MCP Server is coming soon.
